experiencein fine chemicals industry with ISCChemicals, a
pioneer in organo-fluorine
chemistry. Director of ISC 1983 to 1990 with
responsibilities including manufacturing,
technology, business development and research. R&D
director at Rhone Poulnc UK fine
chemicals 1991 until 1993 when he left to found
FluoroSystems Ltd to commercialise a
new method of retinal-repair surgery, obtaining US FDA
approval in 1995. He sold
this business to Alcon Laboratories Inc of Fort Worth
Texas in 1998. Director (since
1989) and shareholder in Melford Laboratories Ltd, a UK
company which specialises in
1-100kg scale pharmaceutical intermediate and biochemical
manufacture particularly
for use during the clinical trial stages of
pharmaceutical development. Independent
Scientific consultant and researcher. Visiting lecturer
at Manchester University
Institute of Science and Technology 1989-92 in chemical
process economics, and visiting
Reserach Fellow at Birmingham University since 1991.
Other interests include
ornithology and environmental conservation. Director of
the Jocotoco Foundation
which
acquires and protects special forested areas in the Andes
in Ecuador.
